Selling your jewellery Part 2
Adopt a mix and match approach to selling your jewellery designs…
We are asked this question all the time by people with a desire to create a secondary or part-time income. Some have a jewellery collection so large they need to sell it to make space for the next batch of designs! Whatever your motivation the fundamentals are the same; right product, right market, right price, right time.
There are several ways in which you can approach selling your jewellery, such as party plan, third party websites e.g. Ebay and Etsy, your own website, craft fairs and shops. Each one deserves more than just a mention, however, we will take a brief look into some of these methods over the coming issues in the hope that it will help and inspire you to take a step forward and begin funding your hobby.
Mix and match approach…
Many successfully jewellery sellers who we talk to, take a mix and match approach to selling their designs. They have a network of friends and family who know they can pop around when they need an emergency Birthday gift. They wear their designs all of the time; don’t forget it’s free advertising! They talk about their passion for jewellery and this creates incidental sales at work, at school, at church, down the pub and in the supermarket. This is no scatter gun approach, these sellers are opportunists, they keep their ears and eyes open and are on the look out for the openings to sell their designs.
The lady in the supermarket has a network of friends; perhaps she’ll host a jewellery party in her home? The landlord/lady at the local pub is having a Ladies Pamper Night; perhaps you can have a table to sell your jewellery? One of the Mum’s at school is a hair dresser, she meets lots of women and has a captive audience for your jewellery; you ask her if she would sell some on commission for you? The church is holding a craft fair, you book a table! Get the idea? You don’t have to stick to one method. If you have access to a digital camera and computer, take photographs of your jewels and upload them to Ebay or Etsy.com for a worldwide audience, but don’t forget to take into consideration the fees!
Hopefully we have demonstrated that there are many ways in which you can sell your designs. Pick a method that suits you and get comfortable with it, then you can branch out and try other ways as your confidence grows.
